What was the name of Fisherman Palunko’s wife? The one who told him stories, prepared his dinner, bore him a son, and then undertook such fantastical actions – renouncing herself and everything she had – just to bring him back from the delusion that had dragged him to the (ocean) floor. What is her name, and why didn’t Mažuranić tell us?
In the namelessness of this heroine – in the namelessness that has cloaked us women throughout history – we anchor this story of ours. And so, with laughter and maybe a tear or two, we dive into the search for what is perceived as the essence of femininity: why are women so persistently and unwaveringly loyal? Is the impulse to sacrifice and to surrender oneself to another a weakness, or a strength that we’ve been nursing for centuries through mother’s milk?
